1. We Reminisce: Heavy D (May 24, 1967 – November 8, 2011).

This morning we pay our respects to the Overweight Lover, who passed away yesterday. He was 44. The Money Earnin’ Mount Vernon representer with Jamaican roots enjoyed plenty of crossover success during his career, like penning the theme song to the TV show In Living Color and appearing in Sprite commercials , but Heavy D & the Boyz also dropped some straight-up hip-hop classics like “Mr. Big Stuff,” “The Overweight Lover’s in the House,” “Gyrlz, They Love Me” and “Don’t Curse.” Behind the scenes, Heavy helped a young Puff Daddy and his cousin Pete Rock move up the ranks in the music business. The clip selected above is Heavy D on stage alongside LeVert performing the group’s hit “Just Coolin'” at the 1989 Soul Train Music Awards. Despite some technical glitches in the sound, it’s still an impressive display of the always livin’ large rapper’s showmanship, including his dancing skills. R.I.P. Heavy D (and Gerald & Sean Levert, too).
