1. WATCH: Uncle Ralph McDaniels on 30 Years of “Video Music Box.”

    Ralph McDaniels talks about his 30 years hosting the seminal public access hip-hop show Video Music Box , a rap music institution airing in the New York tri-state area. Speaking from MoCADA (the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts) in Brooklyn, where an exhibit called “The Box That Rocks” recently showed, the affable Uncle Ralph details the humble origins of the long-running and much loved TV program, citing how the show’s big breakthrough came in 1985 when Video Music Box aired the Fresh Fest, the first time a rap concert was broadcast on television. He also reminisces about the birthday party where Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z serenaded him with “Get Money.” Peep the interview after the jump…
