1. WATCH: Uncle Ralph McDaniels on 30 Years of "Video Music Box."

    Uncle_Ralph

Ralph McDaniels talks about his 30 years hosting the seminal public access hip-hop show Video Music Box , a rap music institution airing in the New York tri-state area. Speaking from MoCADA (the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts) in Brooklyn, where an exhibit called "The Box That Rocks" recently showed, the affable Uncle Ralph details the humble origins of the long-running and much loved TV program, citing how the show's big breakthrough came in 1985 when Video Music Box aired the Fresh Fest, the first time a rap concert was broadcast on television. He also reminisces about the birthday party where Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z serenaded him with "Get Money." Peep the interview after the jump...

True story, these young cats don't know 'bout Uncle Ralph. I remember when you could catch on channel 31 on Sat. night at around 7, 7:30. That man played EVERYTHING!! To all my west coast heads that might see this, Dude was breakin' mad LA joints in NY and the tri-state BEFORE Yo! MTV Raps. When MTV wouldn't play "Straight Outta Compton", Ralph did, along with "Express Yourself", We Want Eazy, Eazy-er said Than Done, Digital Underground, Divine Styler, Rhyme Syndicate-era Everlast, Low Profile-era WC The D.O.C., all that. And I remember the Fresh Fest shows he broadcast, as well as the 1988 Jive records showcase with BDP, Moe Dee, Steady B and Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince (all my OG DJ's, remember Jeff's Whodini routine with "Be Yourself? "If you please...if you please...if you, if you, if you...") Ralph McDaniels, Hip-Hop pioneer, true story...
