1. Listen to DJ Green Giant’s Bernard Purdie Tribute Mix, “The Man With the Golden Arm” (AUDIO).

“Funky Drummer” may get all the glory, but you’d be hard pressed to find a breakbeat that’s yielded more classic hip-hop tracks than Melvin Bliss “Synthetic Substitution.” Bernard Purdie – reputedly the most recorded drummer ever – supplied the oft sampled opening beats from Bliss’ 1973 single. Now, to celebrate his work the Gasface editorial squad and DJ Green Giant present a mix dedicated solely to tracks that sampled the “Substitution” beat. “The Man With the Golden Arm” may share its concept with a classic Matthew Africa mix . But the execution is similarly strong. Plus, it just further attests to the fact that there’s no substitution for “Substitution” – whether backing Sir Ibu or Bieber.
