Australian singer-songwriter Sui Zhen has to date recorded largely acoustically, as demonstrated by the intimate folk-pop of last spring’s debut, Two Seas . Zhen’s latest, though, is a cover version of the Beastie Boys ‘ “Gratitude” – which finds her inventively transforming the Check Your Head staple’s anthemic punk-thrash riffing into a haunting, echo-y, gently drum machine-anchored piece of moodiness. Beasties fan faithful may be taken aback, but the elegiac treatment – performed with genuine affection for the original song – feels mournfully apropos post-Adam Yauch’s passing. Listen below.
