1. Shiznit We Slept On Vol. 20: How Gil Scott-Heron's "We Almost Lost Detroit" Became Common's "The People."

As relevant to hip-hop's development as Gil Scott-Heron's lyrics and spoken word recitations may be, it's the grooves from his records that have memorably provided the sampled musical backbone to many a great rap song as well. The above video from one "RUDOLPHLYRICS" - which is a few years old but new to us - demonstrates just that, concisely dissecting and recreating via MPC the method by which Kanye constructed Common's "The People" out of sampled pieces of Gil Scott-Heron's "We Almost Lost Detroit." Hats off to Mr. West for the ingenious flip. GSH, RIP.
