Last year, the guys from Gasface were in town from France shooting the short film/documentary Lookin4Galt, for which I was interviewed (as I fondly recalled Beverly D’Angelo’s topless scene in the motion picture, Hair – an important event from my youth that intersected with the music Galt MacDermot). Anyways, before my testimonial we chatted about another important event: the Roosevelt Hotel record convention – a monthly event that attracted every significant New York-based hip-hop producer of the early ’90s, and shaped the sound of the music in ways people outside the “beat-digging” scene probably never realized. I wrote a piece about the Roosevelt for Wax Poetics a few years ago, and now Gasface has uploaded “The Roosevelt Years” a short interview with yours truly reminsicing a little more about those days. Included are some great photos from the late John Carraro – one of the major sellers at the Roosevelt. Hope you enjoy.
