1. AUDIO: DJ Red Alert’s Final 98.7 KISS FM Show.

    REDALERT

It was the end of an era Saturday night as Kool DJ Red Alert did his final show on 98.7 KISS FM, the station Red joined all the way back in 1983. After dropping a mix of hip-hop classics and original school breaks, an emotional Red thanked everyone at the station with whom he worked over the years, and bid his listeners a tearful farewell. Ironically enough, the last song of his last mix for the station was Jimmy Castor Bunch’s “It’s Just Begun.”

It was, of course, announced earlier this week that KISS FM will be going off the air Sunday night at midnight – the result of Disney acquiring the station’s frequency in order to broadcast ESPN Radio programming on FM. KISS will merge with long-time rival 107.5 WBLS. Listen to the first 50 minutes and final 49 minutes of Red Alert’s final KISS FM show, and read his message to his fans, after the break…

UPDATE: Entire show in 2-parts via Red’s official Soundcloud page.

Red Alert’s message to his fans via Facebook:

“AS I’M ABOUT TO DO MY FINAL SHOW ON 98.7 KISS FM (10PM – 12 MIDNIGHT EST), I CALL IT THE “THANK YOU MIX”. MANY BELIEVED, ENJOYED & SUPPORTED ME DURING MY TIME ON THIS STATION, I AM GRATEFUL & HONORED TO HAVE YOU BY MY SIDE. YES I LEFT KISS FM SEVERAL TIMES TO WORK AT OTHER STATIONS (HOT 97 & POWER 105) BUT I ALWAYS RETURNED HOME WHERE I FIRST STARTED. THIS TIME THERE IS NO COMING BACK AS KISS FM COMES TO AN END. SOME MAY REMEMBER ME WHEN I FIRST STARTED UNDER AFRIKA BAMBAATAA & THE ALMIGHTY UNIVERSAL ZULU NATION, BUT KISS FM IS THE PLACE THAT BROUGHT ME OUT TO THE FOREFRONT. TO ALL STAFF MEMBERS THAT I’VE WORKED WITH AT THE STATION THROUGH THE YEARS I WANT TO THANK YOU, WE HAD GREAT TIMES. TO EVERYONE I’VE MET THROUGH OUT MY CAREER (ASSOCIATES, BUSINESS, ETC) I ALSO WANT TO THANK YOU. MOST IMPORTANTLY I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO THE LISTENERS WHO MAY HAVE HAD DIFFICULT & STRESSFUL TIMES, BUT STILL TUNED INTO THE RADIO TO HELP THEM GET THROUGH IT ALL, I THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME TO ENTERTAIN YOU.”

This is the saddest news. Red made it all happen. Imagine how different it would be if he hadn’t been at the center of it in the 80s and early 90s.

Red Alert “IS” Hip Hop. No other way to say it. I spent the nights of my youth recording his shows. He is a living legend and he made a tremendous contribution to NYC culture….

      MUCH RESPECT AND LOVE RED!!!!

spent so many hours of my youth listening to Red Alert on Kiss FM and taping some. Sad sad news. One of the original stations to play hip hop has gone off forever.
