Shiznit We Slept On Vol. 36: Racist Toothpaste Commercial.

For five years and counting, this Thai commercial for Black herbal toothpaste has ignited debate on whether or not the spot is indeed racially insensitive or not. Call us old fashioned, but a Black man climbing a 100 ft. pole like a goddamn gorilla named Donkey Kong is wee bit bigoted. Big ups to egotripland fan @lildave215 for hipping us to this ad on which we totally snoozed (like siesta-lovin' Mexicans).

The climbing is a tad bit ridiculous however I am more concerned about the underlying assumption that a man with black skin is somehow automatically or generally scary, bad, and/or dangerous, thus the "looks can be deceiving" bit. Does the commercial call into question this stereotype or is the man seen as the exception to a rule?

This commercial is more weird than racist. I'd say if anything, comparing a brown product to a brown guy is racist. There's no "underlying assumption that a man with black skin is somehow automatically scary"... all it showed was one person thinking that. Do YOU think that? If not then why do you care? If there was a commercial with a murderer in it, would you say the underlying assumption of the commercial is that we should all murder people? The point is... you don't have to agree with a fictional character's ideals. Depicting racism isn't necessarily racist.
