Hooray the Internets – where vintage magazine articles find new, ahem, life. Recently, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of an article on street gangs of the early ’70s, Life magazine uploaded some amazing images of The Reapers – one of the infamous cliques of the Bronx back in the day – shot by photographer John Shearer . The story of how Shearer won the trust of the gang – after visiting its SBX neighborhood five or six times without even bringing his camera – is a great read, and a chronicle of true photojournalism at work. Check out the full story at Life . And peep a few of Shearer’s striking photographs in the gallery up top.
