    From Get On Down:

Within any musical style, there are a few select works that resonate so strongly with audiences that they come to define the genre itself, taking on a mythical quality that transforms the album into something greater than the sum of its individual parts. Meets Rockers Uptown, the 1976 collaboration between producer instrumentalist Augustos Pablo and visionary dub engineer Osbourne “King Tubby” Ruddock, is one of those historic releases. The album, which features Pablo playing melodica, clavinet, piano and organ, contains some of the greatest dub songs of all time, including Jacob Miller’s “Baby I Love You So,” and the darkly seductive title track. The chemistry between Pablo’s beautiful “Far East” signature sound and King Tubby’s meticulous attention to sonic detail results in an album the Virgin Encyclopedia of Reggae says is "regarded by many as one of the greatest dub albums of all time."

King Tubby (along with Lee 'Scratch' Perry) created this magical world for afro-futurism and Jamaican patties to come together. I love dub and everything it has done to help create hip-hop but I unfortunately do not have any Tubby on vinyl as of yet but I did spin some at my old radio station. King Tubby is really one of those artists that truly make a difference from listening to on vinyl.

Because I am a huge dub fan but own next to nothing on vinyl. A deluxe edition of *the* dub album sounds like an excellent place to start. Also, my penis is Jamaican so that is technically a product of its rich cultural heritage. Don't be imperialists!

    • john

because guys in Iowa need things like this. like real bad.

Platanos used to be 2 for a dollar and now they are 2 for 3 dollars and that's not good. How can I afford King Tubby Box Set when all my money going to buy Platanos? That's why I need this.

Man I need some new vinyl and I also get a supreme hard-on for old school dub, plus I feel like y'all need to wise me up on this King Tubby/Augustus Pablo joint, because that would be the right thing for egotrip to do for a fan like myself. Yes?

    • ceedub

Because I just had a baby and I have been listening exclusively to Edo G, and The Bulldogs' "Be A Father to Your Child" since. I guess we could chill together listening to this set while I read the 16-page book to her so she can fall asleep to some real shit.

    • public school whitey

because it's my favorite record of all time. thanks!

    • Devon Cory

My shipmate and I used to jam to this album when we were plopped on a paint float attached to our coast guard cutter sanding and painting that beast for hours on end. I think it was playing when the thing tipped over and we lost the cd and the portable stereo...and our health...because we fell into the Hudson. It would be an honor to have it on wax. Thanks.

"Must" might be too strong a word, but then that may be because, as a broken shell of a man - 40, bald, and overweight - who's every moment is divided between work and raising a 1-year-old, I'm simply no longer capable of summoning the necessary emotions one would require in using such a term. "Would certainly appreciate" rings truer, sadly to say.

However, speaking as one who discovered this absolutely earth-shattering, essential album at a tender, impressionable age, when in youthful folly still clasped onto dreams of one day making a mark in music in knob-twiddling tones just as revolutionary...as one who pored over Marley Marl dub versions (with a special fondness for "Polo Beats" (Snowflake, 1986),) revelling in their dusty echo-filled genius....then I would say possessing said item and, perhaps propping it on a shelf in elegant display above my dust-covered 1200s.....Well, perhaps then some flicker of inspiration in this old, beaten once-was b-boy and dub freak might be awoken. At least until nappies must be changed, the latest horror-show on CBeebies flicked on and the tedium of one's forever-compromised existence takes prominence once again. Perhaps that itself is reason enough, perhaps not. But I'd certainly appreciate it.

    • Andrew McIntosh

One of the best albums I ever danced to! And I can't dance!

    • Ole-Birger Neergård

oh man i need this record. i'm having a shoulder surgery next week because my shoulder broke when i was swimming(!) and there's no other way to fix it. i'll just have to sit around doing nothing for a long time after the surgery, on heavy doses of morphine and what not. this is music for that type of situation. help me out please. i love this record. please. help.

I love Augustus AND Tubby! I used to do a reggae night a couple years ago. Now that I've relocated, I'm trying to get another one going. This would be essential!
