    86-year-old multi-instrumentalist Kelan Philip Cohran played with Sun Ra's Arkestra of the early '60s , and was a key figure on the Chicago jazz scene for decades (mentoring members of Earth, Wind & Fire early on). Cohran's most prized pupils, though, were his own children, eight of whom form the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble - a group as renowned for reinventing b-boy classics like "Shaft In Africa" as brilliantly covering OutKast or performing with Mos Def . Father and sons collaborate for their first album together, Kelan Philip Cohran & the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble , out May 21st via Honest Jon's Records .
