This past spring it was discovered that records from the collection of J Dilla had made their way from a neglected Detroit area storage unit into the sale bins at a local record store. After much public outcry by fans as to how the late producing legend’s possessions could suffer such an undignified fate, the shop’s owner happily returned the collection to Jay’s mother, Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey. Now, Ma Dukes is selling portions of Dilla’s record collection in the first of a series of weekly sales taking place on eBay. Those Dilla stans salivating at the prospect of obtaining vinyl rarities once owned by their hero may want to check the details of the sale. Though each sale comes with official verification from Ma Dukes in the form of a signed and numbered certificate (see above), these items wholly exclude test pressings, personal recordings, personal items, tapes – all of which “are being held by Ma Dukes for inclusion in a possible future Hip Hop museum and upcoming record release projects.” Here’s what you will get:
From the dillavinylcollection eBay listing:
1) A signed and numbered certificate from Maureen Yancey (Ma Dukes) stating the LP record you will receive is from J Dilla’s personal collection.
2) An LP originally bought by Dilla (on one of his many crate diggin’ expeditions) still in the loose bag Dilla put all his records in. None of the records have been cleaned or checked for defects. You will receive it just as it was in Dilla’s collection, possible writing on covers, old price tags, fingerprints and all.
The certificates are numbered with the plan of an online registry for Dilla fans to list their Dilla Collection LP. Including the artist, title, and whether any tracks on the LP are known to have been sampled by Dilla. This registry is dependent on the sales of the limited amount of the collection and response from the fans. Visit the J Dilla foundation web site for future updates.
Records are being chosen randomly (Ma’s Choice) so please do not send any requests, it will not be answered.
