Brilliant musical move here – though sadly one borne from tragic circumstances. New Orleans’ Hot 8 Brass Band – an outfit renowned for its inspired cover versions – tops even previously heralded renditions of Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” and Snoop Dogg’s “What’s My Name” with its take on The Specials ‘ eerie 1981 new wave/ska classic, “Ghost Town.” Originally the soundtrack to UK riots amongst unemployed, disaffected youth in the early days of Margaret Thatcher’s Britain, in Hot 8’s hands the song is infused with an unmistakable NOLA second line strut as a funky yet mournful theme for modern-day New Orleans. The video inter-cuts beautifully composed shots of the band playing with haunting images of Katrina’s devastation. Hot 8’s The Life and Times Of… LP drops November 12th via Tru Thoughts.
