1. The Ghetto Brothers’ Benjy Melendez and ego trip’s Chairman Mao on WNYC’s Soundcheck (AUDIO).

    Ghetto-Brothers

This past week saw the official re-release of the Ghetto BrothersPower-Fuerza, the rare-as-hell early ’70s Latin rock/soul album by the legendary South Bronx gang turned community activist organization. As BX street kids who moved towards musical expression and community support as an alternative to gang life, the GBs predate such organizations as Afrika Bambaataa’s Zulu Nation. And recently “Yellow” Benjy Melendez, founder of the club, visited WNYC’s Soundcheck program along with our own “Chairman” Jeff Mao (who wrote the extensive liner notes for the reissue) to discuss Power-Fuerza, the Ghetto Brothers’ legacy and their connection to hip-hop.
