This summer sees the release Beat Box: A Drum Machine Obsession , a book devoted to studio hardware authored by Joe Mansfield – producer of Edo.G’s “I Got to Have It” and other gems. As a prelude to the book, Get On Down will drop a dual flexi disc release featuring the one and only Schoolly D on Record Store Day 2013 (April 20th) that pays homage to the Roland TR-909 drum machine. Get On Down: This unique package features two 7” flexi-discs (one clear, one orange) in a gatefold package. Included on these flexis are the sounds of the famed Roland TR-909 drum machine; narration and explanations by the legendary Schoolly-D, one of the machine’s early masters in the mid-80s (who is interviewed in Beat Box); cuts by DJ 7L; and instrumental remakes of the drum tracks for Schoolly-D’s “P.S.K. What Does It Mean?” and “Gucci Time,” programmed on the TR-909 by Joe himself… [includes] a 20-page booklet created by Joe Mansfield featuring history of the TR-909, original advertisements about the machine, photos and technical specs.
