By now, hopefully everyone has heard the news. Just a few hours ago, the mighty De La Soul began offering up their catalog of music (minus The Grind Date ) for free for 24 hours (Friday, February 14th at 11 AM EST to Saturday, February 15 at 12 PM noon), all for an exchange of your email address.
The gracious move helps celebrate next month’s 25th anniversary of the groundbreaking 3 Feet High and Rising , but it’s also a result of the group’s inability to get their music available online due to pesky sample clearances, record label personnel changes, and contractual stipulations.
“It’s about allowing our fans who have been looking and trying to get a hold of our music to have access to it,” Posdnuos told Rolling Stone . “We’ve been blessed to be in the Library of Congress, but we can’t even have our music on iTunes. We’ve been working very hard to get that solved. It’s been too long where our fans haven’t had access to everything. This is our way of showing them how much we love them.”
In other good news, expect more new music from De La, including the album You’re Welcome , slated to drop later this year, as well as an EP called Preemium Soul on the Rocks , with three beats each from DJ Premier and Pete Rock , and they also plan on recording a track over an unreleased Dilla beat.
Go to We Are De La Soul now to download music.
NOTE: As you can imagine a lot of people are visiting the site, so the traffic must be crazy.
