In commemoration of all the teacher’s pets, class clowns and everyone in between returning to their respective learning institutions, I present a “Back to School” -themed edition of my latest RBMA Radio program. Listen below and read on for more info about the show. And as per usual, in lieu of a regular playlist I’ve posted corresponding cover/label art in the image gallery above for you to peruse while you listen. Enjoy!
With the season of books, backpacks, and no. 2 pencils upon us, Jeff “Chairman” Mao studies up on his rap history and emerges with an intensive lesson plan: the “Back to School Rap Special” edition of his long-running RBMA Radio program, “Across 135th Street.” As one may quickly deduce based on the agitated opening strains of the Convicts’ early ’90s Rap-A-Lot Records classic, “Fuck School,” this isn’t necessarily the most child-friendly show. Equal parts irreverence (Big L’s D.I.T.C. headbanger, “School Days”), convenient wordplay (Common’s early ’90s demo recording, “First Days of New School”), cynicism (Kanye’s “School Spirit”) and sincere encouragement (kiddie rapper Pookey Blow’s oddball old school essential, “Get Up (and Go to School)”; Community People’s “Education Wrap”) the curriculum herein reflects the gamut of emotional highs, lows and hang-ups long associated with the annual return to the classroom. Y’all gon’ learn today!
