For all those folks who enjoy reminiscing about the mid to late ‘90s rap era, this mix by Sweatson Klank for Andrew Meza’s BTS Radio show will have you open. The L.A.-based DJ/producer also known as Take has assembled a healthy dose of East Coast-centric boom bap for the inaugural, hour-long Slept On, But Not Forgotten installment of a planned series, electing to focus on selections only familiar to the dedicated hardcore followers of hip-hop. So if hearing names like Krumb Snatcha, Mic Geronimo, OGC, Paula Perry, and Royal Flush (not to mention more familiar monikers like Sadat X, Show & AG, and Big Noyd) get you ready to push play, then don’t delay and check out this 60 minutes of ’90s underground rap bliss after the jump…
Three dope DJs, one very cool mix. Clothing brand Master Culture brings together revered turntable technicians Swift Rock, Lean Rock, and Skeme Richards for Dream, Mobilize, Execute – a 3-part mix in which each selector puts together a set reflecting one of the title’s themes. Hence, Swift Rock’s portion emphasizes classic rap tracks on the R.E.M. sleep tip (as in, “It was all a dream…”), Lean mobilizes your frame with his trademark b-boy friendly break-mania, and Skeme plays executioner by dropping his own well-curated slew of razorsharp hip-hop. No playlist, so you’ll just have to listen through (lucky you!). Peep it, after the jump…
You may remember DJ Green Giant from his great Galt MacDermot mix, Down With the King. Green Giant – a/k/a the “Beast From the Alps” – returns along with our peeps from French editorial collective Gasface with a mix, Just Did It, dedicated to the works of super-producer Just Blaze (who’ll be joining the crew out in France to celebrate its 6th anniversary later this month). Includes a nice selection of R-O-C classics as well as running narration in the form of interview segments with Just, and other well placed audio snippets (Chappelle’s classic “Allow me to reintroduce myself – my name is Hov!”). Listen/download, and peep playlist, after the jump…
DJ Shortkut, renowned turntable wizard of the Invisible Skratch Piklz, recently wrote this very simple message on his Vimeo page in reference to the “90s Hip-Hop Video Mixtape”: “i kept this on the under for too long…but sharing is caring….ENJOY!” You will. It’s 48 minutes of classic tracks and music videos from the era of Carhartt and Timbs expertly orchestrated into one big audio-visual bonanza. We’ll even forgive the fact that it’s billed as all-’90s but starts with a song from the ’80s (Slick Rick’s “Hey Young World”) as it features the likes of East Flatbush Project’s “Tried By 12,” Group Home’s “Supa Star,” and Smif-N-Wessun’s “Sound Bwoy Burriel.” Such a simple concept, but executed so well. Peep it, after the jump…
Last week Kon – renowned as half the DJ-ing/record collecting duo Kon & Amir – contributed a stupendous guest DJ set to Gilles Peterson’s new BBC6 radio program. Consisting entirely of never-before-heard versions of disco and boogie funk classics remixed by Kon from the original reels, the mix has now thankfully made its way onto Soundcloud, and is yours to download gratis. These are the times when we’ve gotta thank our lucky starships the Interwebz exists. Much needed feel good music for a Monday, people. Listen and download, and peep playlist, after the jump… Continue Reading »

Today, egotripland contributor Matthew Africa drops a brand new, monster E-40 best of mix. This, in advance of 40′s not one, not two, but three albums dropping next Tuesday, Block Brochures Vol. 1-3. If you’ve ever heard Matthew’s previous tribute mixes devoted to DJ Quik, R. Kelly, Gang Starr and Too $hort (the latter with DJ Eleven), you know son goes all out. Or goes in. Or goes off. (Take your pick.) As Matt himself wrote at djmatthewafrica.com:
“Yay Game draws 40 songs from all eras of E-40′s career, from 1990′s ‘Let’s Side’ to his current single, ‘Function.’ His catalog is so vast and deep that choosing just 40 songs to represent him was incredibly tough, but I’ve tried to fit in everything from mob slumpers and album sleepers to radio and club hits. Obviously, there are a lot of other classic songs that could have been on here but aren’t; I picked the ones that to me best embody his work as a whole. Or are just ones I really love.”
Get ya’self some Game. Now.

Nastee has directed and produced several entertaining animated shorts in recent years – most of them featuring his own productions and performances. But – as detailed in the above promo vid – before that, the studio wizard did quite a bit of big time work with the likes of Big Pun, Mobb Deep, 50 Cent, N.O.R.E., Just Blaze, and more. His new mixtape, The Resume, conveniently compiles these tunes. And guess what? It’s an actual mixtape – as in it’s mixed (like with beat matching and zigga-ziggas and everything!). Download The Resume for free. And while you’re at it, grab The Resume: The Bonus Ish, which details the making of many of the classics featured in the mix.
