(Blue City Crew)
Here is Topper Carew’s amazing documentary about the early ’80s West Coast hip-hop scene.
Mr. Carew, who co-created the TV show Martin, produced the film D.C. Cab (co-starring Mr. T) and has directed various other film projects, gives us an excellent look at the larger Los Angeles area at a time when the art of b-boyin’, pop-lockin’, emceeing, DJ-ing and graffiti street art really impacted the lives of a lot of minority youth. The film focuses primarily on the dancers (Boogaloo Shrimp and Shabba Doo, who achieved mainstream Hollywood fame, are featured along with Carson’s Blue City Crew, which later morphed into Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E.), but there’s also an interview with the always engaging rapper Ice-T. This is essential viewing, y’all.
