(Blue City Crew)
Here is Topper Carew’s amazing documentary about the early ’80s West Coast hip-hop scene.
Mr. Carew, who co-created the TV show Martin , produced the film D.C. Cab (co-starring Mr. T) and has directed various other film projects, gives us an excellent look at the larger Los Angeles area at a time when the art of b-boyin’, pop-lockin’, emceeing, DJ-ing and graffiti street art really impacted the lives of a lot of minority youth. The film focuses primarily on the dancers ( Boogaloo Shrimp and Shabba Doo , who achieved mainstream Hollywood fame, are featured along with Carson’s Blue City Crew, which later morphed into Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E. ), but there’s also an interview with the always engaging rapper Ice-T . This is essential viewing, y’all.
