1. WATCH: "Big Fun In the Big Town" - 1986 Hip-Hop Documentary (Official Trailer).

If you've never seen Big Fun In the Big Town before, and you consider yourself a fan of the Hip-Hop, watch this clip now. Really. The film is a superb 1986 hip-hop documentary produced for Dutch TV shot entirely in New York City, and features Mr. Magic, Marley Marl, Grandmaster Flash, Run-DMC and Jam Master Jay, LL Cool J, Biz Markie, Roxanne Shante, Russell Simmons, MC Shan, Schoolly-D, Doug E. Fresh & the Get Fresh Crew, the Last Poets, and more. We had the pleasure of screening Big Fun In the Big Town at the Maysles Cinema in Harlem two years ago with the director, Bram van Splunteren, former Def Jam/Rush director of publicity Bill Adler, and the great Schoolly-D in attendance. But Five Day Weekend is doing the public service of making it officially commercially available on DVD for the first time this May, and has cut together some of the film's highlights in a trailer. Peep it... after the jump...

My music teacher in junior high actually showed this during music class back in '89. A classically trained pianist talking about "I want you to see this documentary about the most interesting new musical art form, hiphop". Rotterdam, Holland was also one of the first European cities with an impressive underground hiphop culture. Excellent breakdancers as early as 1983. As Dutch hiphop head we are very proud of this documentary. Enjoy, rest of the world :-)!

We always wondered where that footage of Roxanne Shante with Biz Markie came from. Seen it on youtube. Think its been sampled too. But it was a mystery until we finally seen the documentary. So crazy that some significant New York footage was never seen by people in New York!
