Earlier this year I interviewed the great arranger Benjamin Wright Jr. for RBMA Radio . Mr. Wright’s storied career and the impressive range of projects on which he’s worked – which include everything from playing keyboards in Syl Johnson’s band the Pieces of Peace to doing the strings for Michael Jackson ‘s Off the Wall , OutKast/Andre 3000 ‘s The Love Below and all of Justin Timberlake ‘s solo albums – made him a natural fit for a full-on lecture at the Academy in Tokyo this fall. Having the gentleman who wrote the string parts for “Rock With You” walk us through the track was kind of a treat, to say the least. Also discussed: how the strings and horns on Earth Wind & Fire ‘s “Boogie Wonderland” were done in one take, and why DJ Quik (with whom he collaborated on “Well” featuring Raphael Saddiq and Mausberg – RIP) is the man. Oh yeah, Ben Wright also wrote “One Hundred Ways” for Quincy Jones but I thought better of playing him MF Doom’s version . Maybe next time. Enjoy.
